Many U.S. homes built prior to 1950 have cloth insulated wiring. These wiring systems are insulated with varnished cloth. Over the years, the cloth can become brittle and fall off the wires. This can create a fire and shock hazard due to exposed, bare wires. In addition, frequently, cloth insulated wiring systems are not grounded, which is a safety issue in itself. If your home was built before 1950 and you suspect it has cloth insulated wiring, it is recommended that a licensed electrician inspect your electrical wiring system for safety.
