The Difference Between Various Types Of Nails

Different Types of NailsThere are dozens of different types of nails, each offering a completely different purpose and end result. Choosing the right nail for the right purpose or job is often extremely important for this very reason. Here is a quick guide for choosing the perfect nail for your project.

Steel Nails
This is the most common type of nail, and also is the least expensive but it cannot stand up well when it comes to the elements, and therefore they are best suited for interior use.

Common Nails
Common nails are nails that have large and flat heads. These common nails are best suited for general construction where seeing the head once it has been driven in is not important.

Box Nails
Box nails are common nails, but they are narrower and are generally intended for lighter types of job.

Ring Nails
This type of nail has rings along its shaft, allowing it to hold well in softer types of wood.

Finish Nails
Finish nails have smaller and narrower heads that are capable of being driven below the wood’s surface using a tool known as a nail punch.

Galvanized Nails
These nails are coated with Zinc, galvanizing them to allow for resistance to the elements, which makes them best suited for exterior uses.

Casing Nails
Casing nails are designed specifically to be countersunk, which means that they are meant to be driven underneath the surface of the wood, and they are best suited for trim work and cabinetry.

Brad Nails
Brads are nails that have nearly no head at all and they are very narrow, and are meant to nail thin pieces of wood together without causing them to split.

Roofing Nails
Roofing nails are nails with extremely large and flat heads, designed to hold roofing shingles in their places,

Wire Nails
These nails are very similar in nature to brad nails, although their heads are somewhat larger,

Spiral Nails
These nails have grooves shaped like spirals running along their shafts, which makes them hold well especially in harder types of wood,

Bright Nails
These nails are best suited for indoor and interior purposes because they do not have a finish that is resistant to corrosion.

Cement Coated Nails
These nails are nails that are coated with an adhesive that allows for a better holding capability,

Plastic Composite Nails
These nails are incapable of staining or rusting, and they tend to make a stronger connection than what metal nails are capable of.
