How To Prepare Your Home For Fumigation

fumigationNothing can provide more discomfort than a pest problem. There are ways to deal with pests on your own and most are relatively simple but there are times when the problem gets out of hand. It is at these moments when calling a professional exterminator is your only option. In these extreme cases, you may even have to tent your home. This may lead some to wonder how to protect your personal possessions form the harmful chemicals that are used to fumigate your home.

The best place to start your preparation is with the living members of your household, this includes your pets. Any house pets including fish and hamsters will be injured or killed by the harmful chemicals that are used to fumigate your home.

Fireplaces, water heaters, and any other sources heat should be removed to prevent igniting the chemicals in your home. Any bushes and plants that are immediately outside of your home should be trimmed. You should also empty your refrigerator and pantry and move all of your food out of your house. Ask a friend or family member if they would let you to store anything in their refrigerator.

The point of fumigation is to get rid of pests that may be hiding in your home. To ensure that you are not leaving anywhere for these critters to hide, you should unlock and open every room, cabinet, closet, basement and attic door. This will allow your exterminators to freely navigate throughout your home and treat anywhere that may be a good place to hide.

Bed linens, slipcovers, and mattresses should be moved out of your house. If you cannot find anywhere to keep your bedding and linens, you can always contact your local movers and use the storage services offered by one of the moving companies in your area. Remove all drapes and open all blinds to allow your windows to be treated.

Although it is required, you may want to remove any electronic items to avoid damaging them, just remember to check for any insects that may be hiding in the circuitry. Household appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers should also be turned off and unplugged. By taking the necessary precautions you can prevent any damage to your personal possessions.
