The New Year, Technically Speaking

First of all, I have no why idea why they (it’s always ‘they’ isn’t it- whoever ‘they’ are) placed New Year smack dab plunk in the middle of the coldest part of winter. The Chinese do it too. I’ve heard talk that Christmas actually comes from a pagan holiday that celebrates the winter solstice, and was later ‘Christianized.’ But whatever the case may be, it seems reasonable does it not that the New Year, in temperate climates anyway, should begin in the spring when everything is coming back to life, bears are running around again big and hungry, and boy often meets girl. Sprouts are sprouting, the ground is thawing, forests are lemony green with young bud, and the fields are royally carpeted with an explosion of blue and yellow wildflowers. Now that is New Year’s! Birds migrate back and build their nest, they are lots of good things to eat, it’s a delight to shed one’s coat and go outside shrieking. Romance is in the air.
