Several years ago, all power generators had the output directly connected to coils being spun in a magnetic field and thus generating a reasonable wave shaped voltage output. But to make sure that the output had a 50 Hz frequency, just like the AC, the engine should be governed to operate at 3000 rpm, even when putting little current. If the power generator is being utilized for low loads, this meant lots of engine wear, unnecessary noise, and fuel usage.
